Honey Soy Glazed Shrimp
Learn how to make honey soy glazed shrimp with snow peas with this quick, easy and DELICIOUS RECIPE
I like to start with plump and succulent wild American shrimp. I love the firm texture, rich flavor and sweetness of wild American shrimp so I always check the labels to be sure that’s what I’m getting. I stopped by my local Whole Foods and picked up a couple of pounds of shrimp from North Carolina. Whole Foods generally labels their products well so you know what you’re getting.
Season the shrimp and dust them with cornstarch. The cornstarch helps the sauce to hold on to the shrimp. Then I fry the shrimp for just 2-3 minutes per side and drain them on a rack.
I pour out the oil and make the sauce in the same pan. Simmer the soy sauce, ginger and garlic in the pan for a minute to scrape up the bits stuck to the pan, they add flavor to the sauce. Pour the honey into the pan and simmer for a few minutes longer to thicken the glaze. The sauce will bubble up quite a bit so be sure to use a pan with high sides.
Just toss the snow peas (broccoli florets are great in this recipe, too) into the simmering sauce for a minute to tenderize them. Turn the heat off and stir in the shrimp. Coat the shrimp well in the sauce and serve the honey soy glazed shrimp over steamed rice. You could also toss some noodles into this if you don’t want to have rice.
- 2 pounds of medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- ½ - 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (depending on how hot you like it
- ½ teaspoon fresh ground pepper
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ½ cup canola or vegetable oil for frying
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 cloves of garlic
- ½ teaspoon fresh or powdered ginger
- ½ cup honey
- 10 ounces of snow peas
- Cooked white rice to serve
- Pat the shrimp dry and season it with cayenne and fresh ground pepper
- Toss the shrimp in the cornstarch to coat
- Heat the oil in a skillet
- Fry the shrimp in one layer (do this in batches if your skillet isn't large enough) for 2 minutes per side
- remove the shrimp from the oil and drain the oil from the skillet
- Pour the soy sauce in the skillet, add the garlic and ginger and simmer for one minute, stirring to loosen any bits on the bottom of the pan
- Pour in the honey and let simmer for 3 minutes until the mixture becomes thick
- Stir the snow peas into the honey soy mixture and let cook for 1 minute
- Turn off the heat and stir in the shrimp
- Serve over rice
