Quick and Easy Pizza Sauce

I like to keep things simple when I make my own pizza sauce at home. While I’m waiting for my HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH to rise I grab a saucepan and get this easy pizza sauce recipe on the stove

Start with olive oil and garlic

Warm a teaspoon of olive oil (not extra virgin, regular olive oil is best for this) in a large saucepan. Smash two large cloves of garlic and add them to the oil to release the flavors. This is a good time to add the tomato paste to give it a roasted flavor.

Next, add the crushed tomatoes

Stir in a fifteen ounce can of crushed tomatoes. As the tomatoes simmer the garlic will permeate the sauce. Season the tomatoes with kosher salt, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat. A pinch of sugar is optional. Some say a little sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes and enhances their sweetness. Give your sauce a taste and decide if you feel a quarter or half teaspoon of sugar would help.


Simmer your sauce on low heat for fifteen to twenty minutes. The oregano and garlic will release all of their flavors and the sauce will thicken a bit.

Once the sauce has finished cooking discard the garlic and tear some fresh basil leaves stirring them into the sauce.

Let the sauce cool to room temperature before topping your pizza. Store the pizza sauce in the refrigerator for four to five days.

  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • t tablespoons of tomato paste
  • one 15 ounce can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon of granulated white sugar (optional)
  • 2 - 3 leaves of fresh basil
  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan
  2. Crush the garlic and add it to the pan
  3. Add the tomato paste to the pan and saute for about a minute
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes
  5. Stir in the salt, oregano, red pepper flakes and sugar ( if you're using those)
  6. Simmer the sauce for 15 to 20 minutes
  7. Turn off the heat
  8. Remove the garlic cloves
  9. Tear the basil leaves and stir them into the sauce
