I’m honored to work with local Girl Scout Marissa as we discuss common ingredients and additives found in snack foods. Check out the video below to see what we learned.
HIDDEN SUGAR
When reading the labels in processed food be sure to lookout for hidden sugars. Any time you see “corn syrup” on a label be aware that it is a type of sugar. Look for words ending in “ose” to find some forms of hidden sugar. Dextrose, glucose, sucrose, and fructose are all forms of sugar. Cane juice, agave nectar, and rice syrup are just a few of the many types of sugar you may find in your snacks. Check out this article from Eating Well for more information.
PRESERVATIVES
Many packaged foods have preservatives added to give them a long “shelf life” to help them stay fresh for a long time on the store shelves and in your pantry. Citric acid is a commonly used preservative but it is also used to add a tart or sour flavor to foods and beverages. Read more about citric acid on The Spruce
Emulsifiers
Soy lecithin is a commonly used emulsifier that helps to give a smooth mouthfeel and uniform appearance to foods. Emulsifiers help ingredients, like oil and water in salad dressings, mix together when they normally would not. To find out more about soy lecithin read this Huffington Post article.
