We had a bit of a family road trip a few months ago, on our way from Florida to South Carolina we drove through Savannah, Georgia. Now, I can’t pass through Savannah without stopping at least for a little while so we took a lunch break at Sisters of the New South soul food restaurant.Savannah, Georgia is one of my family’s favorite cities. We love that downtown Savannah is a walk-able city with gorgeous squares and shops. I could walk around there all day.
On this short visit we ventured out of the more touristy areas of Savannah and headed over to Sisters of the new South. I knew we were in for some good, down home cooking when I saw smothered turkey wings on the menu. Yeah, that’s for me! This is like the food you get after Sunday service in the church basement.
Much of the menu is right up front in the restaurant on a steam table, but some goodies like fried fish, steak and such are cooked to order back in the kitchen.
Just look at this gorgeous pile of fried okra below! it’s hand battered for sure! So fresh and crunchy.
Here are those smothered turkey wings I was telling you about. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen turkey wings on any restaurant menu and that’s a real shame because they are DELICIOUS. You get so much for your money at Sisters of the New South. Great home style collard greens, cornbread and sweet potatoes are all on the menu for not very much money at all. Sisters of the New South is definitely a budget friendly restaurant choice.
My husband ordered fried whiting which came out of the kitchen sizzling hot and perfectly seasoned.
Both kids ordered fried chicken that was really good, well seasoned and juicy. We all left happy and full.
The best news is that we don’t have to wait for another trip to Savannah for a taste of Sisters of the New South soul food. THEY’RE OPENING ONE IN ATLANTA IN JULY 2016!! I’m really looking forward to visiting their new spot.
