Johnny's po-boys oyster

We packed our things and we’re ready to head out of New Orleans, but not before we tried a couple more iconic Louisiana foods. We had to get Po-boys before we left and after some online research, we decided to drive over to St. Louis Street in the French Quarter and visit  Johnny’s Po-Boys New Orleans Restaurant.

Johnny’s Po-Boys is open from 8 am until 4:30 pm, we arrived at about 10:45 am. THIS RESTAURANT IS CASH ONLY There was no line when we arrived but most of the tables in the front of the restaurant (there is seating in the back of the restaurant as well) were full. It was still fairly early, most of the diners were having breakfast, but it wasn’t too early for po-boys.

We walked up to the counter and placed our order- one shrimp po-boy for my husband, a crawfish po-boy for my daughter, a crab cake po-boy for my son and a fried oyster po-boy for me. Service is friendly at Johnny’s even when it gets busy. After we placed our order and grabbed a table a line from the counter to the door formed and it stayed that way until we left.

Everything was made to order so there was a bit of a wait, nothing excessive. When our order number was called my son and I  headed back to the counter to pick up our food.

The first thing we need to talk about is the bread. So many times when I’ve ordered a sandwich, especially one with seafood, the bread is dense and heavy, overwhelming the fillings…but not at Johnny’s. The bread at Johnny’s is light and crusty but not at all dry. It doesn’t mash the filling when you bite into your sandwich, it was perfect.

The fried shrimp po-boy was great. Plump, flavorful shrimp, not too much breading. I’m not sure why I don’t have a picture of it but it was delicious and beautiful…I guess you’ll have to take my word for it.

The fried oyster po-boy was equally delicious

The only miss for us was the crab cake po-boy which looked like a mixture of real and imitation crab meat. I actually like imitation crab meat but it doesn’t taste like real crab. If a crab cake is on the menu it should be real crab or labeled if it’s not.  It was also very heavily seasoned overpowering the flavor of the crab. It wasn’t terrible but I wouldn’t order it again.

We ordered our sandwiches “dressed” (topped with lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise and pickles) for  60 cents more.

I would definitely go back for the delicious sandwiches and the great service.

We were just about ready to hit the road out of town but there was one more stop to make before we left town. We needed to buy some Boudin (Cajun pork and rice sausage) to take home with us. Luckily my husband’s friend recommended we go to …<<READ MORE>>
