French Toast with Bourbon and Brown Sugar

  • One loaf of French bread or your favorite bread Cut into ten 1 inch pieces
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 cups of milk whole or 2% or 1/2 and 1/2
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of bourbon or 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of orange zest serve the rest of the orange with the finished French toast
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)

  • 4 tablespoons of butter for cooking
  • Syrup and fruit to serve


  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees to keep the French toast warm
  • Beat the eggs, milk, sugar, bourbon, orange zest, and salt together in a large bowl
  • Heat a pan or griddle over a medium flame
  • Coat the griddle with 1 teaspoon of butter
  • Work in batches of 2 or 3, don't dip all of the bread at once
  • Dip the bread into the egg mixture for 15 seconds per side
  • Cook the French toast on the buttered griddle for 3-4 minutes per side
  • Remove the finished French toast to a wired rack and keep it warm in the oven until you finish the rest of the batches
  • Serve with fruit and syrup
