Ketogenic diet snacks in bed and Luke Cage on Netflix, a perfect date night combination. Don’t worry, there are no spoilers in this post so if you haven’t started watching Luke Cage yet I won’t ruin anything for you. I love this show, it’s pretty much perfect in my eyes, so perfect that I’m trying to watch it slowly to make it last.
Luke Cage is like the most delicious bar of fine dark chocolate sprinkled with a little sea salt (I’m talking about the show, not the actor). It’s full of complex flavors like raspberry and tobacco that combine to make a rich experience and a little salt brings out flavors you didn’t know were there. Luke Cage is just like that. It’s complex. Bittersweet, rich and a little salty . You don’t know when (or if) you’re going to get another one because you bought it at Homegoods (or some other store that has the most random selection of things) so you want to break it into the tiniest pieces and savor it for as long as you can. It’s THAT GOOD!
My husband and I are up to episode 9 out of 13 and I almost don’t want to watch anymore because I don’t want it to end. Who knows we’re going to get a second season of this masterpiece? It will be at least a year, possibly more, if the internets are correct. (Yes, I meant to say internets)
The acting is superb, the writing stellar and the visuals are STUNNING! If you watch carefully you’ll see Luke’s fine collection of literature. The blog “Black Nerd Problems” put together a fantastic syllabus that you can find HERE. The soundtrack…oh my goodness the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The show starts off with a Wu-Tang track you know it’s going to be off the hook. I think I just told you my age by saying off the hook but whatever. I have found myself longing to visit Harlem’s Paradise to witness musical performances by Raphael Saadiq, Faith Evans, Jidenna and especially Charles Bradley. Charles Bradley’s performance of “Ain’t It A Sin” is probably my favorite moment of this first season so far.
Luke Cage is the perfect date night watching for my husband and I. We climb into bed with a gorgeous plate of charcuterie and cheese, some tasty drinks and press “PLAY”.
Now, on to the Ketogenic diet snacks! A ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates, (less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day) and high in protein and fat. It sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does. Get more information on ketogenic diets HERE
Since I’ve been on a ketogenic diet (Down 14 pounds, YAY ME) I haven’t been able to have the usual TV watching snacks like chips and such. I don’t focus on what I can’t have, I focus on what I can have so I put together this tray of Ketogenic diet snacks that are perfect for my low carb lifestyle and my husband can enjoy it as well even though he’s not on a diet. This isn’t your typical diet food.
This is how I built my tray of Ketogenic diet snacks for date night in bed with my husband and Netflix.
I started with a tray and marble cutting board like the ones pictured below as the base.
Serrano ham, sopressata and havarti cheese were layered on the cutting board. Be sure to check the label and purchase meats and cheeses with zero carbohydrates.
Then I added a bowl of macadamia nuts. Macadamia nuts have only about 4 grams of carbohydrate per ounce making them a perfect low-carb snack. All nuts are not created equal-almonds have about 6 grams of carbohydrate per ounce, pistachios have about 8 grams per ounce. Be sure to check the labels.
A small dish of Boursin cheese with shallots and chives is a nice addition. Two tablespoons of Boursin cheese contain one gram of carbohydrate. Serve with some fresh celery sticks, at about 3 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams of celery sticks it’s a great addition to your little carb snack tray. It’s a perfect vehicle for dipping into the soft Boursin cheese.
A pretty sea shell and a succulent clipping add sculptural beauty to your tray.
We can’t forget the drinks on the bedside table. I thought some Black Eagle bourbon would be appropriate to sip while watching Luke Cage, I think “Black Eagle” sounds like it could be a Marvel super hero. Black Eagle Bourbon is smooth enough to sip without mixers and it has a bit of sweetness because it’s aged in charred oak barrels. Most straight spirits have no carbohydrates, just stick to the ones that aren’t flavored and sweetened.
I don’t have an alcoholic beverage like this frequently because while bourbon has no carbohydrates your body will burn off the calories of alcohol first, before it burns off any fat, it can slow your weight loss down. A little sip now and then won’t hurt but it’s important to keep the alcohol to a minimum. I also brought up a tall pitcher of cucumber and lime infused water. It’s important to stay hydrated well watching hot show like Luke Cage.
