Dining at Iconic New Orleans Restaurant Cafe Du Monde Traveling with Teens

BEIGNETS! We started our second day in New Orleans with beignets on our brains. We hopped a streetcar (which is a FANTASTIC way to see the city) to Jackson Square and visited Cafe Du Monde. There are several locations of Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans we visited the busy French Market venue. Open 24 hours a day, Cafe Du Monde serves up beignets, tasty pillows of fried dough covered in powdered sugar, three to an order. Coffee is blended with roasted ground chicory (the root of the endive plant) originally to help stretch the once scarce coffee, now it’s done out of tradition. For a souvenir of your visit to Cafe Du Monde order your coffee in a commemorative mug for just a few dollars more.  They offer two styles to choose from.

THIS GUY is the real MVP with the no look beignet pass into the hot oil. You can watch beignets being made through a window in the back of the restaurant.

I’m always a little skeptical when visiting restaurants that have reached iconic status, I’ve been disappointed before. That was not the case this time, Cafe Du Monde lived up to the hype. Service was quick and polite even in this incredibly busy restaurant. Our order of beignets, cafe au lait and hot chocolate was delivered hot and fast. The beignets were not greasy in the least, it was as if they had never seen oil. They were fluffy and tender on the inside, absolutely delightful.

Don’t fear the crowds and lines walk right in and grab the first empty table you see, even if there are dishes on it. Waitstaff will come in a hurry to clear the table and take your order. The folks waiting on line are either getting a to-go order or waiting for a table on the coveted patio.

We did a bit more sight seeing in the French Quarter, stopping into the French Market to do a bit of shopping for trinkets. Vendors had lots of hats, scarves and wallets for sale, lots of stuff but probably nothing you really need.

We headed back out and across the street to browse the souvenir shops and candy stores. We walked around Jackson Square where there are tons of artists selling original works. Musicians give amazing performances around the square so you’re bound to hear some good music as you stroll, bring some cash for tips, these guys are working hard and need your support.

After we regained our appetites we called UBER for a ride to another New Orleans Iconic restaurant, Willie Mae’s Scotch House known for having the BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN THE COUNTRY.  Could this restaurant live up to the hype with chicken fit for a PRESIDENT….<<READ MORE>>
